An ex-President Donald Trump’s preferred candidate is projected to lose Nebraska’s GOP gubernatorial primary, signaling that Trump’s influence in the party has its limits — even in Republican stronghold states.

University of Nebraska Regent Jim Pillen, who was endorsed by current Gov. According to NBC News projections Tuesday, Pete Ricketts won the close primary race. Pillen will likely advance to the Nov. 8 general election where he can defeat Carol Blood (Democratic rival in reliably red state).

Since 1999, Nebraska has been represented by a Republican governor. Ricketts has been barred from running for a second term.

Pillen, Charles Herbster and Pillen were the frontrunners in the primary competition. Charles Herbster was a Trump-backed business executive, whose campaign was made after several women. accused him of sexual misconduct.

Herbster was a first-time candidate for gubernatorial office and he poured millions of dollars into his campaign. He has refuted the accusations made by eight women including a Republican state senator.

Although he has indicated that he might run again for the presidency in 2024 as a strong hint, a growing number of Republicans are also considering running for the White House.

Since receiving Trump’s endorsement last autumn, Herbster was closely connected to Trump and his associates. Herbster paid $11.3million to fund his campaign this year.

Trump said about Herbster, “He’s being badly maligned and that’s a shame.” Trump claimed that Herbster was innocent of the despicable accusations, but he did not provide evidence.
