PARIS (Reuters) – French prosecutors opened a preliminary criminal investigation into E.coli infection linked to a Pizza Factory for Nestle’s Buitoni brands. This could have resulted in the death of one individual.

According to a spokesperson from the Paris prosecutor’s Office, an investigation was launched on Thursday into charges of involuntary killing of one person, 14 injuring others, and violations of food safety rules.

Nestle France did not respond immediately to our request for comment.

France’s RMC radio and BFM radio first reported that 56 E.coli cases were confirmed by local authorities. Nearly all victims are between 1 and 17.

E.coli (or Escherichia coli) bacteria is found in healthy individuals and animals. Although most bacteria strains are non-threatening, there are some that can cause abdominal cramps and bloody diarrhea.
