NEW DELHI (Reuters] – Rising energy and food prices pushed India’s annual retail inflation up to an eight year high in April. Economists believe that central banks will need to hike interest rates to lower prices.

As a result of Russia’s invasion in Ukraine, consumer prices worldwide have risen. Food grain price has reached record levels. This has prompted many central banks to increase interest rates.

According to the National Statistics Office, inflation based on consumer price index rose higher than anticipated, reaching 7.79% in April. It was also above the Reserve Bank of India tolerance of 6%.

The April print was 6.95% higher than the month before and 4.23% more than a year ago. According to Reuters, analysts had predicted retail inflation of 7.5%.

A source close to the subject told reporters that the RBI’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) raised the key repo interest rate 40 basis points higher at an earlier meeting. This month.

The MPC’s next meeting is set for June 6-8.

Sakshi Gupta is the principal economist at HDFC Bank. She said that inflation will likely remain higher than 7% for six to seven more months.

“The RBI will likely respond to the June meeting with a rate increase of 25-35 basis point (bps) followed by additional rate hikes to take the repo rate up to pre-pandemic levels, at 5.15%.” she stated.

TOUGH TIME for CONSUMERS

Consumers are worried about rising food costs. They were already hard hit during the two-year pandemic. Prices of vegetable oil and edible oils have risen amid concerns of lower wheat production this year.

India’s headline retail inflation rate was 8.33% in May 2014. When Prime Minister Narendra Modi became the leader, he promised to reduce prices.

The rise in cost of living in India has forced millions of parents to move children from private https://www.reuters.com/world/india/indias-private-school-aspiration-increasingly-out-reach-inflation-bites-2022-05-03 to state run schools, or from elite schools to cheaper ones.

The prices of food, which account for nearly half the Consumer Price Index (CPI), increased 8.38% in April compared to 7.68% one month prior, driven by an increase in vegetable and edible oil prices.

This year, imports have been more costly due to an almost 4% depreciation in rupee against the dollar.

The rupee of India fell to 77.63 dollars against the dollar, setting a new record. However, it recovered some losses and ended at 77.42 when central banks intervened.

Both the NSE Nifty 50 index and S&P closed more than 2% lower as inflation fears and further interest rate tightening roiled markets.

Since mid-March the retail price of gasoline, diesel, cooking gas has risen by 10%, and many companies have passed on an increase in input costs to consumers like transportation, imported raw material, etc.

Three economists estimated that core CPI inflation (excluding volatile food prices and energy prices) was between 6.8% to 7.1% in April. This compares with the 6.30% and 6.32% for the preceding month.

Swiggy’s Nadeem Khan stated that “with rises in the prices of fuel and food, it is becoming more difficult to pay household expenses.”
