Brittney Griner’s pre-trial detention in Russia extended by a month, lawyer says

Brittney Griner of the WNBA was granted a one-month extension to her pre-trial in Russia during a Friday court hearing, according to her lawyer. The Associated Press.

Alexander Boikov Griner’s lawyer said to the outlet that Griner may be going before a judge soon.

Griner, the star center of the Phoenix Mercury was arrested in February on drug charges after a search of her luggage at the Sheremetyevo airport near Moscow turned up vape cartridges containing oil derived from cannabis, authorities said. 

A maximum penalty of 10 years could be imposed for this offense.

Russian officials stated that March was a “very good month” for them. Griner’s detention had been extended until May 19. Griner, who was believed to be in good health at the time of her arrest, had been seen by her Russian legal team numerous times per week.

In an earlier month, the State Department found that she had been being “abusive”.wrongfully detained Russian government”. This classification would permit the U.S. government a more aggressive approach to securing her release.

This decorated 31-year old has two Olympic gold medals as well as a WNBA championship title with Mercury. She has also been a player in Russia over the past seven winters.
