Mexico to modify import and export law to curb inflation, govt says -Breaking

MEXICO CITY (Reuters] – Friday will see a Mexican president issue a decree to change tariffs under the country’s export and import laws. The move is intended to lower inflation, a spokeswoman for the ministry of finance said Thursday.

It comes one week after President Andres Manual Lopez Obrador announced a plan to curb inflation. The government also pledged to boost production of staple food with support from local business leaders.

However, the spokesperson of the ministry refused to disclose more details regarding the amendments to the law before they were published.

Inflation in Mexico, core and headlines reached new highs in April.

Mexico’s central bank raised its benchmark interest rate 50 basis points Thursday to 7.0%. The central bank also indicated that they could adopt “more aggressive measures” in order to reduce inflation.
