(Reuters) – Brittney Griner, a professional American basketball player, was released Friday by a Russian court. Her lawyer informed Reuters that the extension had been extended for one month.

Griner, who was twice a gold medallist at the Olympics, was taken into custody in February by Moscow’s Sheremetyevo international airport. She was accused of possessing cannabis-infused vaporizer carts.

Russian customs services stated that the accused offense could result in 5-10 years imprisonment. U.S. State Department stated that she was being held illegally and assigned diplomats to assist her release.

Washington and Moscow kept their diplomatic channels open despite dire bilateral relations since Russia’s February 24 invasion of Ukraine.

A prisoner swap was reached last month between the U.S. Marine veterans Trevor Reed and Russia. Reed had previously been in Russian prison for nine years on assault charges.

Konstantin Yaroshenko was his exchange. Yaroshenko is a Russian pilot currently serving a 20 year sentence in America for drug trafficking convictions.
