SHANGHAI/BEIJING – Shanghai tightened its COVID-19 lockdown in what it hoped was the last week of its fight against the virus. Beijing, however, continued to battle its smaller and more persistent epidemic.

China’s 25-million-strong commercial center hoped to emerge from its six-week-old, painful lockdown in the latter part of this month. On Saturday, authorities hoped one final round of tightening would end the deadly COVID pandemic.

Many of the most populous cities in America were permitted to go out for short walks and grocery shopping trips about a week earlier, but have been notified to remain indoors for a 3-day period.

Many buildings were informed overnight that Friday’s restriction would be lifted. It is common for residents to remain silent and they cannot leave the house. In some instances, this may also mean that there will be no deliveries.

Linette Lim has been in lockdown for more than 40 days. She said that her community was served such notice Friday after their official risk level had fallen to a level which should theoretically have allowed them to relax restrictions.

She said, “It is very frustrating because everybody has been asked for sacrifices to overcome the current difficulties for the collective benefit, and people have consistently been complying with and coping to whatever is thrown at their way.”

Lim stated, “But somehow the goals keep shifting.” “Nerves can be frayed, and people don’t have an end goal.”

CLOSING QUARANTINE CENTRES

COVID curbs have had a significant impact on the lives of hundreds of millions living in numerous Chinese cities. This is a measure that has adverse effects on manufacturing and consumption in China, the second largest economy. It also disrupts global trade and supply chains.

Analysts expect that the economy will shrink in this quarter. More stimulus has been promised by officials.

China offers subsidies, tax cuts, and loans that are easier to students to increase their chances of getting into work, China cabinet announced Friday. A record 10.76million college-educated graduates will be able to enter this year’s workforce, despite the weaker economic environment.

China’s unemployment rate, which was at its peak in almost two years, reached 5.8% in March. It was also the highest for youth since July 2021, when it stood at 16%.

Ding Bo, a Shanghai official said Saturday that the number in Shanghai’s quarantine hospitals had dropped to 50,000. This is one-fifth from the peak last month. According to him, five quarantine hospitals were shut down by the authorities.

There were more than 1,500 coronavirus infections per day in this city, which is a decrease of more than 2,000 cases the previous day. This was all within areas that have the most stringent controls.

The outbreak’s pathology is being monitored closely for any cases found in areas that are relatively safe. One such case was detected Friday, compared to four on the previous day.

Beijing saw 56 new cases daily, an increase from 50. Since the April 22nd outbreak, when its first cases were identified, the capital has reported a handful of new cases nearly every day.

According to officials, there were no rumors of a lockdown imminent in the capital. They advised residents to avoid panic buying and to keep their homes safe. As many streets of Beijing were quiet and peaceful, it seemed that people are following this advice.

The majority of mass testing in the city is now a routine.

Already, authorities in capital banned dine-in at restaurants.
