(Reuters) – A small group of Ukrainian soldiers gathered in a basement north of Kyiv to watch their country win Eurovision Song Contest. They believed it was a sign of their victory over the Russians.

Kalush Orchestra’s entry “Stefania” won them the Eurovision. They benefited from a lot of support across Europe and were able to win an emotional victory which was enjoyed by the President.

Tetyana said that she had won a victory, today in Eurovision but very soon in Ukraine-Russian War. She was standing in the basement, decorated with paintings by children of Ukraine flags and “Glory for Ukraine” signs.

These happy and tired looking servicemen sat at a monitor, tapping on their knees to Kalush’s performance. They cheered when Kalush was declared the winner and they began to clap with joy.

Vitaliy, an army soldier, said “We’ll also win.” “We’ve shown we are not just able to fight; we also have the ability to sing quite nicely.”

Now in its third month of operation, the Russian invasion has killed thousands of civilians, forced millions to flee their cities, and left many Ukrainians homeless.

Moscow refers to its actions as “special military operations” in order to dearm Ukraine and defend it against fascists. The West and Ukraine both claim that the claims of fascists are unfounded and that this war was an unprovoked aggression.

Mariupol, the southern port of Mariupol, has been the most heavily fought. Despite weeks of bombardment and Russian intervention, hundreds of Ukrainian fighters are still fighting for their lives at Azovstal Steel Works despite heavy bombardment.

The basement was a stationed to the north and closer to Belarus’ border. It paid tribute to their south-bound comrades.

Vitaliy stated, according to the servicemen that “the next Eurovision will be hosted in liberated Mariupol”.
