Marcus Brandt/Pool via REUTERSBERLIN (Reuters), – Germany is making all arrangements for a rapid ratification process in the event that Finland or Sweden apply for NATO membership. Foreign Minister Annalena Bock stated on Sunday that Germany had made these preparations, and underlined both countries’ need to have security guarantees.
On a second day in talks with NATO counterparts in Berlin she said that Germany had prepared all necessary elements to speed up the ratification process. She also stated that the ministers agreed on Saturday at a dinner that there shouldn’t be a grey area between when they apply for membership and when they become members.
“If they are interested in joining, they will be able to do so quickly… We must ensure that they have security guarantees. They must also make certain there is no transition period.
Her comment was about the lengthy ratification process that could take up to a year. During this time, the Nordic countries won’t be covered by NATO article 5, which ensures that any attack on an ally will also affect all.
