(Reuters). -The suspect in a Sunday shooting at a Church Luncheon in Southern California was identified by authorities Monday as a 68 years old Las Vegas man. Authorities said he was currently in custody and had been charged with attempted murder.

David Chou was the suspect in Sunday’s shooting attack at Laguna Woods’ Geneva Presbyterian Church. This is a neighborhood of elderly people. The Orange County Sheriff’s Department reported that one victim was killed and five more were hurt, four of which critically.

According to the Presbytery at Los Ranchos’ Facebook page (NASDAQ:), the shooting took place during a luncheon in honor of the former pastor of Taiwanese churches that had shared space with Geneva. Around 30 to 40 people were present at the church when the shooting occurred.

According to police, it is not clear what the motive of the suspect was or who he was trying to attack. Police did not release the names of any of the victims. They were all Asian. Also, the suspect is of Asian descent.

According to the sheriff’s department, four of the wounded (four men aged from 66 to 90 and one woman aged 86) were taken to hospitals to receive treatment. However, the gender and age of those who died have not been revealed.

Police said that when the gunman opened fire on the victims, the police called for help from those present at the luncheon to stop the violence by confronting the suspect and binding him with an electric cord. The scene was home to two handguns.

The churchgoers showed… extraordinary courage and heroism in intervening against the suspect. “They undoubtedly prevented further injuries and deaths,” Orange County Sheriff Jeff Hallock stated Sunday.

A lunch reception was arranged by the congregation for the former pastor. He had moved to Taiwan from the United States, and had returned to the United States. Tom Cramer (leader of Presbytery Los Ranchos) said that he had been a pastor at Geneva Presbyterian Church.

The gunman claimed that the attacker did not recognize churchgoers or attendees at banquets.

Laguna Woods Village is the main retirement community in Laguna Woods Village. Leisure World was previously known as Laguna Woods Village.

Cramer, a member of the congregation’s Facebook group stated that for the past ten years the Irvine Taiwanese Presbyterian Church shared premises with Geneva Presbyterian Church.

The shooting was only the second in mass shootings in this country, which is plagued by gun violence. A white, 18-year-old male opened fire on Saturday at a Buffalo supermarket located in a majority Black neighborhood. The attack, which authorities called a racist, left 10 people dead and three others injured.
