Factbox-Buffalo shooting victims included deacon, retired cop, grocery worker -Breaking

(Reuters) – Investigators continue to investigate the motives behind a gunman’s attack on a Buffalo grocery store. On Monday, new details were revealed about the victims and three others who sustained injuries in the incident. [L2N2X80NG]

There was a wide variety of people involved in the 13 victims, eleven of whom were Black. One of the victims was a pharmacy worker, one who served as a priest, another who was a former police officer and worked at the shop’s security, and an older man who helped with cart driving and other tasks.

Here are some biographical sketches about the victims:

Ruth Whitfield

Whitfield (86) was Garnell Whitfield’s mother. Local media reported that she was driving home to visit her husband, who is in a nursing facility when she visited Tops.

Whitfield said that Whitfield was his father’s primary caretaker.

Katherine Massey (“Kat”)

Massey, 72 years old, was a Buffalo-based civil rights advocate and wrote many letters to The Buffalo News. She wrote an article last year that highlighted the increasing violence against gun owners in Buffalo and other large cities across America.

“Illegal handguns via state gun trafficking are the main culprits,” she said, calling for federal legislation and more federal action to stop gun violence.

According to her sister, Massey is “a beautiful person.”

Pearly Young

Young, who is known to many as Miss Pearly, taught Sunday school at her church and led youth groups. The Buffalo News reported that Young is also called Miss Pearly.

Madison Carter tweeted about her 25-year tenure as the head of a Central Park food pantry.

Young was a missionary and grandmother who, at 77 years old, loved to sing, dance and be with her family.

Margus D. Morrison

His mother said that Morrison was 52 and a father to three kids from Buffalo. USA Today reports that he has been working as a bus driver for the local school in Buffalo since 2019.

Andre Mackneil

USA Today reported that Mackneil, 53 years old, traveled to Buffalo with his relatives to see them. He was there to purchase a surprise birthday cake, but it ended in tragedy. His cousin Clarissa Alston-McCutcheon said Mackneil “loved family – was always there for his family.” He lived in Auburn, New York, about 120 miles east of Buffalo, police said.

Aaron Salter

Salter (55), a retired Buffalo officer, worked at Tops as a security guard after retirement and was highly praised for his actions in stopping the gunman. Buffalo Police Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia called Salter a “hero in our eyes.”

Multiple reports indicate that he fired on the gunman but that the body armor was worn by the attacker and the victim was not injured.

Geraldine Talley

Talley Chapman Johnson, 62 years old, is from Buffalo. She was the youngest of nine sisters, Kaye Chapman Johnson, said to ABC News. People said that Talley was a long-standing executive assistant who is known for both her smile and her cheesecake.

Roberta A. Drury

Roberta Drury (32), was known for being a lively, outgoing individual who could “talk to anybody,” Amanda Drury stated on Facebook Messenger.

Her older brother had just received a bone marrow donation and she moved from Syracuse to Buffalo. He was able to have his bar, The Dalmatia (the Dalmatia), and his family helped by her.

Heyward Patterson

According to Buffalo News, Patterson (67) was a deacon in the church who provided rides from the grocery store for people.

Celestine Chaney

Chaney (65), of Buffalo was a breast cancer survivor who became a single parent after retiring from companies that made baseball caps and suits. Wayne Jones, Wayne Jones’s son, said that her mother had been to Tops to get strawberries in order to make shortcake.

In the attack, three more people were also hurt.

Jennifer Warrington

According to the Buffalo News, Warrington was 50 years old and worked as a pharmacy assistant at the supermarket. Warrington was from Tonawanda in New York. He was treated at Erie County Medical Center and then released.

Zaire Goodman (age 20), was a Tops shop employee who was driving shopping carts back home when he was hit in the neck. Charles Everheart Sr., the grandfather of Zaire, said to Reuters. Goodman was released by Erie County Medical Center.

Christopher Braden

Braden, 55, is from Lackawanna in New York just outside of Buffalo.
