JetBlue to launch tender offer for Spirit Airlines

(Reuters) – JetBlue Airways (NASDAQ) Corp will launch a hostile offer to buy the airline. Spirit Airlines The Wall Street Journal published Monday’s report on Inc (NYSE:) Inc. It was days after an ultra-low cost carrier turned down the $33 share buyout offer.

JetBlue will offer $30 per share for cash in the tender offer. Spirit, however, is still open to paying an initial price, the report stated, citing sources familiar with the matter.

Spirit Airlines shares increased by 16% during premarket trading

JetBlue and Frontier Group Holdings are locked in a fight for Spirit. They argue that Spirit’s takeover will help them compete better with the U.S. “Big Four” airlines, which control almost 80% of the market.

JetBlue plans to encourage Spirit shareholders to oppose Frontier’s planned merger, according to the Journal. Frontier has offered $21.66 per share in stock and cash for JetBlue’s shares.

Reuters did not receive a response from JetBlue Spirit, Frontier or Spirit immediately.

Spirit plans to host a shareholder meeting in June for the vote on Frontier Group Holdings merger.
