WASHINGTON, (Reuters) – U.S. Representative Liz Cheney urged other Republicans to reject white extremism days after a teen gunman motivated by right-wing “great substitute” theories allegedly murdered 10 people in a racist shooting incident in New York.
Cheney wrote that the House GOP leadership had enabled white nationalism and white supremacy and anti-semitism. He was a vocal critic of Trump’s predecessor and his allies in Congress.
“History has proven that words can lead to far more than they seem. These views must be rejected by @GOP leaders and their supporters,” she wrote in a tweet.
Republicans could face new challenges as they attempt to reduce infighting about Trump’s party loyalty in preparation for the Nov. 8 midterm elections, which will decide control of Congress.
The 180-page manifesto circulated online and was believed to be written by an 18-year old white man charged in the murder spree. It outlined the Great Replacement Theory, which is a racist conspiracy theory that states whites were being replaced in America by minorities.
Chuck Schumer, a top senator Democrat, blamed Trump’s rhetoric about immigration and the spread of “replacement theory” on conservative media pundits.
Schumer stated that these views shouldn’t be allowed in American society, and especially not in segments of the most watched news channels. Schumer called for hate to be eradicated and laws to combat gun violence.
Cheney was one of the two Republicans who were subpoenaed by a congressional committee to give evidence about the Jan. 6th, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol that hundreds of Trump supporters committed.
Cheney was joined in the discussion by Adam Kinzinger, another maverick Republican, who also serves on the committee. They blamed the leadership of the party for not condemning racism in Buffalo, New York where eleven of the thirteen victims were Black Americans.
Kinzinger tweeted Sunday, “Here’s my replacement theory”: We need to replace @EliseStefanik (@GOPLeader), @RepMTG and @CawthornforNC,” Kinzinger stated in a tweet. He was referring to McCarthy and House Republican Conference Chair Elise Stefanik as well hardline Trump supporters Marjorie Taylor Greene, and Madison Cawthorn.
Kinzinger said, “The substitute theory they’re pushing/tolerating” is getting people to die.
According to Cheney and Kinzinger, House leaders pander to Trump supporters and allies as they try to control the House during November’s midterm election.
Kinzinger tweeted Saturday that Stefanik promoted white replacement theory in Facebook ads (NASDAQ:). These ads claimed Democrats intended to give amnesty for illegal immigrants as a way to defeat the U.S. electoral system and maintain their power.
Stefanik’s Office has issued a statement denying that criticism.
Alex DeGrasse was a senior adviser at Stefanik.
Cheney’s No. 1 replacement was Stefanik. He represents New York’s state congressional district. Three House Republican after Cheney condemned Trump’s Jan 2021 Capitol Attack by his supporters.
Greene tweeted that only the gunman was responsible for the shooting. McCarthy and Cawthorn didn’t respond to our requests for comment.
