He has more than 150 endorsements for candidates at midterm elections which will determine who controls Congress in 2023 or 2024.
Trump’s influence will be demonstrated by 12 key choices, some of which are against incumbent members.
The weeks ahead of the primary elections will put Trump’s influence among Republican primary voters. But, Nov. 8 will only show Trump-backed candidates who can win office.
J.D. Vance wins primary
* U.S. Senate seat for Ohio vacated by retiring Senator Rob Portman
* Nov. 8 election
Trump-backed Vance won in a crowded Republican primary on May 3. He is favored for victory in November against Democrat Tim Ryan. However, some political observers anticipate a tough challenge from Ryan.
Vance is perhaps best known for his best-seller, “Hillbilly Elegy,” which detailed the fall of Ohio factory towns to poverty and abuse. In an effort to get rid of his past reputation as Trump critic, he has made himself an angry populist in Trumpian fashion.
Check out the upcoming races
Ted Budd
* U.S. Senate seat for North Carolina vacated by retiring Senator Richard Burr
* May 17 Republican nomination contest
Ted Budd was a member of the House of Representatives rank and file. He sought to become the Republican nominee for the tight election in November. Even though Trump has endorsed Budd, he has been trailing Pat McCrory, the former Governor of North Carolina, for most of his race. However, Budd is showing a large lead in recent polling.
Mehmet Oz
* U.S. Senate seat for Pennsylvania vacated by retiring Senator Pat Toomey
* May 17 Republican nomination contest
Oz is a well-known celebrity doctor. His public image suffered in 2014 when he stated to lawmakers that bogus ads for diet products were being investigated. He also said that not all of the products featured on his program had scientific merit. Trump’s endorsement for Oz caused a split in the Republican Party. In Pennsylvania, he was joined by David McCormick (NYSE;) and Kathy Barnette, a conservative commentator. Recent public opinion polls show that the three contenders are virtually tied. In what will be one of the most competitive races in November, the winner of the primaries will have to face a Democrat.
Herschel Walker
* Versus U.S. Senator Raphael Warnock of Georgia
* May 24 Republican primary
Walker, who is an ex-football star, is likely to win the Republican nomination. Polls and opinion polls show that Walker would be a strong candidate against Warnock. Warnock, a Democratic pastor, has been predicted to lose in November. Trump-endorsed Walker has weaknesses, including allegations of domestic abuse. Walker-backed groups are planning ads that claim Walker cannot beat Warnock due to his baggage.
David Perdue
* Versus Georgia Governor Brian Kemp
* May 24 Republican primary
Perdue acknowledged that he lost the U.S. Senate election to Jon Ossoff 2021. But in March 2022, he retracted his claim that the election had been stolen. He cited evidence of fraud from a case that was finally dismissed by a Judge. Trump is endorsed Perdue over Kemp. However, Kemp leads Perdue by a double digit margin in the polls despite Trump dismissing Perdue’s statements regarding election fraud.
Katie Arrington
* Versus U.S. Representative Nancy Mace
* June 14 Republican primary for South Carolina’s 1st congressional district
South Carolina’s state representative has challenged a Republican lawmaker who voted for Trump’s impeachment. Mace was annoyed by the ex-president shortly after he took office in January 2021. She said that Congress should address Trump’s role in the attack on the U.S. Capitol Jan. 6, 2021. Arrington is trailing Mace according to public opinion polls.
Russell Fry
* Versus U.S. Representative Tom Rice
* June 14 Republican primary for South Carolina’s 7th congressional district
Trump’s choice to unseat Republican Rice is one of few Republicans who voted for impeachment of the ex-leader. He was a Republican state representative with nearly half a million dollars in his campaign on March 31. This suggests a possible race against Rice.
Loren Culp
* Versus U.S. Representative Dan Newhouse
* Aug. 2 Republican primary for Washington’s 4th congressional district
Trump picked Loren, an ex-small-town chief police officer to challenge Newhouse. Culp had in March demanded the execution of a Black man who is accused of injuring and throwing a woman down the train stairs. Trump had in February endorsed Culp, angry by Newhouse’s 2021 impeachment vote.
John Gibbs
* Versus U.S. Representative Peter Meijer
* Aug 2 Republican primary for Michigan’s 3rd congressional district
Gibbs was a Trump-era housing official. His nomination to the U.S. Office of Personnel Management fell after both political parties challenged his tweets that were infuriating, which included references to false conspiracy theories and Democrats. Meijer is a far more successful fundraiser than his opponent, having voted for Trump’s impeachment. A Democrat will challenge the nominee in the race for the nomination, which is likely to be the closest House race in November.
Joe Kent
* Versus U.S. Representative Jaime Herrera Beutler
* Aug 2 Republican primary for Washington’s 3rd congressional district
Kent, a former special forces officer, has been campaigning with Matt Gaetz, a far-right U.S. Representative from Florida. He told Oregon Public Broadcasting that he had arranged a conference call on social media with Nicholas Fuentes with white nationalist Nicholas Fuentes. However, he stated that he did not agree with Fuentes “ethno nationalism”. Kent’s campaign had $1 million more in the bank by March 31, which set up a challenge for incumbent Herrera Beutler. Herrera Beutler voted to impeach Trump.
Kelly Tshibaka
* Versus U.S. Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska
* August 16 open primary contest
Trump supports Tshibaka (an ex-Alaska state commissioner for administration), to unseat Murkowski. Murkowski was one of seven Republican senators who voted in favor to imprison Trump on inciting insurrection charges in 2021. Trump has made Alaska a proxy battle with Mitch McConnell (Republican Senate Leader), who promised to support Murkowski’s campaign.
Harriet Hageman
* Versus U.S. Representative Liz Cheney
* Aug. 16 Wyoming at-large-district Republican primary
Trump gave his support to Hageman in September 2021 as he sought to penalize Cheney. The former president was impeached on the charge of inciting rebellion. In a December poll, Hageman was ahead of Cheney by 20 percent.
