MADRID (Reuters – Spain’s former King Juan Carlos is set to visit the country this weekend, his first trip since leaving in August 2020 for the United Arab Emirates. The incident was causing scandal and the mayor said Tuesday.

Juan Carlos (84) stated in March that he maintained his UAE residence, although he visited Spain often after Spanish and Swiss authorities dropped several investigations into fraud.

Juan Carlos, once revered for his contribution to Spain’s democracy transition in Spain, abdicated in 2014 after a series of scandals. These included an affair with Corinna zur Sayn-Wittgenstein Seen (Danish national). Now, he is seen as a liability to King Felipe.

Juan Carlos may be tried in Britain for harassment charges brought against him in an affair.

Sanxenxo mayor Telmo Martin said that the ex-king would visit Sanxenxo, a municipality in the north region of Galicia to participate in a regatta.

Martin stated, “After nearly two years without being with us,” Martin added.

Martin stated that he didn’t know whether the king electus (his title following the abdication) would be participating in the race in which his boat will sail.

Juan Carlos could make the public announcements if he had any. The Royal House stated that they couldn’t confirm the visit.
