REUTERS/Guglielmo MangiapaneVATICAN CITY, (Reuters) – His doctors may not agree with him but Pope Francis believes that a shot of tequila might be able to help his pain in the knee.
As his popemobile stopped by St. Peter’s Square for his final general audience, several Mexican seminarians shouted at him to ask how his leg was doing.
The Argentine pope responded in Spanish, “It’s not being naughty.” The pope has had to resort to a wheelchair due in part, to relieve pain in his leg and other existing problems.
A group of seminarians thanked Francis, the sitting pope, for carrying out his duties in spite of pain. They also told Francis, 85 years old Francis that their persistence is a model for priests to follow.
The pope noted that the flag the two men were wearing made them Mexican and asked him: “Does he know what I have to do for my leg?” You can have a little tequila.
After much laughter, one of the men shouted back “If we one day go to Santa Marta we’ll bring to you a glass of wine,” referring specifically to the Vatican Guest House where Francis lives.
One of the seminarians, Rodrigo Fernández de Castro, posted the exchange, which took place at the general audience last Wednesday, on TikTok.
