DUBAI, (Reuters) – The Iranian and Saudi foreign minsters are likely to meet in Iraq shortly, an Iranian lawmaker informed the semi-official Fars news Agency on Tuesday. It was a move which would be seen by the Middle East as a way to lessen tensions among regional foes.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry was unavailable for comment immediately.

Fars was told by Javad Karimi Qoddusi, an Iranian lawmaker.

Shi’ite Iran and Saudi Arabia, which are dominated by Sunni Muslims, have been locked in proxy conflict across the Middle East. Last year, direct negotiations were initiated to attempt to reduce tensions.

Tehran described the fifth round in talks among regional rivals as “positive” in Baghdad in April.

After Iranian protesters stormed Saudi Embassy in Tehran, Riyadh cut all ties to Tehran in 2016.
