CAPE TOWN, South Africa (Reuters) – A South African court granted Tuesday another adjournment to Jacob Zuma’s corruption case in relation to arms deals. Zuma’s legal team is pushing for the dismissal of Zuma as the leading prosecutor in this long-running case.

Zuma was ousted from the office of head of the state after being in power for nine years. Zuma claimed he has been the victim of political witch-hunt. Zuma pleaded not guilty in September to corruption, money laundering, and racketeering charges over $2 billion arms deals in 1990s South Africa, when he was South Africa’s deputy president.

He says that Billy Downer, his lead prosecutor, is biased against him. But the High Court of Appeal and Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA), have both rejected all attempts to substitute him.

Pietermaritzburg High court Judge Piet Koen put off the trial until August in order to give the president of SCA the chance to review previous rulings that allowed Downer to continue on the case.

Koen explained that an adjournment has been granted on the ground that, if the (SCA] application has been resolved by the 1st of August 2022 and no appeal has been filed, the trial shall restart at 10 o’clock on the 15th of August 2022.”

He added that if the SCA case is not resolved by August 1, new dates will be set. Thales, coaccused in the French defense firm, also pleaded guilty.
