U.S. Rep. Madison Cawthorn lags behind competitors in ad spending heading into primary

U.S. Rep. Madison Cawthorn of North Carolina hasn’t spent any money locally on television advertising in his bid for the GOP primary Tuesday. This is a significant lag behind other candidates and he faces opposition within his own party to maintain his congressional seat.
Data from Medium Buying shows that Cawthorn’s campaign spent just under $147,000 to buy cable spots during the week leading up to Tuesday’s primary. According to data from Medium Buying, his campaign has invested approximately $13,000 in radio ads. The PAC has raised over $1 million with big money donations from the likes of Ryan Salame, co-CEO of FTX Digital Markets, a subsidiary of cryptocurrency exchange FTX; John Clay Sykes, the founder of utility giant ESG Operations; North Carolina oil supply company JH Reaben Oil & Supply Co. and Americans for a Balanced Budget, a 501(c)(4) nonprofit that pushes back on what they see is overt government spending. They do not disclose the names of their donors.
Douglas Stewart is the founder of the organisation. According to Americans for a Balanced Budget website, he once served a key role in North Carolina politics.
Reps for Salame and Sykes, JH Reaben Oil, Americans for a Balanced Budget, and Salame did not respond to a request for comment.
