- Encrypted messaging app Session has launched its ‘private calls’ beta.
- It uses the Oxen Network’s blockchain capabilities.
- OXEN coin can be used to stakable or private assets.
Session, the Oxen-powered messaging application, announced this week that its secure voice and video call feature – which would rival that of WhatsApp and Facebook (NASDAQ:) Messenger – has gone into public beta.
The encrypted messaging app allows users to use voice and video calling without the need for intelligence or AI technology monitoring their calls.
An encrypted messenger doesn’t require any user information, such as email addresses or phone numbers. The program allows users to only call contacts in order to protect privacy and prevent spam.
It is possible to simply start conversations with others, provided that both the users accept the request.
Going to such lengths shows Session’s firm stance on protecting user data – a topic that Facebook has been questioned about in the past.
Important to remember that WhatsApp Messenger and Facebook Messenger have been reported to collect data from users. Doubts have surrounded WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption implementation due to its closed source code, making it impossible to verify the quality of its encryption. Furthermore, WhatsApp’s centralized servers give them a central point of failure.
Session on the other hand is built upon a decentralized network and aims to remove user distrust of messaging apps. Session relies on the Oxen Network as its underlying infrastructure. It is a network of community-operated incentivized users that serves to protect the app and its users. Session cannot function without Oxen or its service nodes.
The Session app is completely free. It currently boasts over 300,000. Users per month, which makes it one of most popular dapps. CoinQuora discovered that Session already has a plan to monetize the service. The team claims that the subscription revenue will be used to buy OXEN coins on the open market, which will then burn.
OXEN is an OTC cryptocurrency that can be stored in a stakable and private asset. This PoS network can power auxiliary services like Session and Lokinet. Service node operators receive OXEN coins.
