OTTAWA, Reuters – Canada announced Thursday that it will ban China’s Huawei Technologies Co Ltd (HK:), and ZTE Corp (ZTE Corp) 5G equipment to safeguard national security. This is in addition to joining the other members of the Five Eyes intelligence sharing network.

Francois-Philippe Champagne, Industry Minister, stated that ZTE and Huawei would be excluded from 5G networks. Under the plan we are announcing today, providers who have already installed this equipment will need to stop using it and get rid of it.

Champagne stated that reimbursements would not be given to companies who have removed their 5G equipment by June 2024. Businesses that use 4G equipment should be removed no later than 2027.

The delay in the decision, which was widely expected, came amid tensions between China and Canada. Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Britain and the United States have already prohibited the use of the equipment.
