BEIJING (Reuters). -China lifted some COVID-19 testing requirements for travelers flying into countries such as the United States. The pre-departure quarantine was also cut for some inbound passengers as China fine-tunes its Omicron-related measures.

These slight adjustments were in response to certain factors, including “characteristics for coronavirus variations”, according to Chinese consulates or embassies. They did not give further details.

According to announcements made late Tuesday by the Chinese embassy and many consulates, travelers from Chicago, Dallas, New York and Los Angeles will not need an RTPCR or antibody test for seven days prior to flying.

Those who fly from airports other than their own will need to submit two RTPCR tests in 48 hours or 24 hours.

As China insists upon its “dynamic COVID Zero” strategy, travel to and from China plunges during COVID outbreaks. This has included restrictions on passport renewal and issue, quarantines and cancellations for all travellers.

The Omicron version’s shorter incubation time has resulted in a slightly easing of restrictions for international travelers. Beijing, the capital of China has reduced the time required to quarantine travellers at centralised facilities after their arrival from 14 days.

Starting Sunday, travellers from Canada to China will have to undergo a RTPCR test 7 days prior to departure. Additionally, they will need to stop using antibody tests. Those with COVID will no longer be required to show chest scans, according to the Chinese embassy.

The embassies of the United Arab Emirates and Serbia, as well as Bangladesh, announced Wednesday that they have removed certain testing requirements and reduced the time required for workers at Chinese companies before departing to quarantine.

The pre-flight quarantine period for Bangladeshi travellers has been reduced to five from seven days. Meanwhile, the quarantine period for certain staff in Serbia was halved to one week according to diplomatic notices.
