WASHINGTON, (Reuters) – An ex-FBI officer testified that a Hillary Clinton lawyer said he wasn’t acting for any client in 2016, when he shared a tip regarding Donald Trump’s possible ties with Russia.

Michael Sussmann (Clinton campaign lawyer) is charged with lying to the FBI about hiding his political ties. This he strongly denies. On Thursday, James Baker, former FBI General Counsel, testified for many hours in federal court about Sussmann’s September 2016 meeting.

Sussmann gave a now-discredited tip claiming that internet communications were being made between Trump’s company and a Russian bank.

Baker said he is “100% confident” that Sussmann told him he was not attending the meeting on behalf of any client.

“I think it was pretty close to the beginning of the meeting. Baker spoke part of Baker’s introduction to the meeting.

Baker’s testimony supports U.S. Special counsel John Durham who was appointed by Trump to investigate any mistakes made in his investigation into Trump campaign collusion with Russia. Durham is the first to bring Sussmann’s case before a jury.

Durham’s team asserts that Sussmann was representing Clinton’s campaign as well as Rodney Joffe (a technology executive who led the research on the possible links between Alfa Bank, Trump Organization).

Sussmann has pleaded guilty but his lawyers maintain his innocence. He never lied about Baker or arranged the meeting for his clients.

“No one ordered him to go. Attorney Michael Bosworth made the opening remarks on Tuesday to jurors.

The administration of President Joe Biden has given Durham the opportunity to carry on his work.
