WASHINGTON (Reuters] – U.S. Senator Foreign Relations Committee approved on Wednesday the nomination of veteran diplomat Bridget Brink to serve as U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine. The committee planned to make a push to have her confirmation quickly by the entire Senate.

Brink should easily get confirmation for a key position that’s been vacant for the past three years.

Brink was confirmed hearing by the committee on May 10, two weeks after Biden had sent her name to Senate. This quick act reflected the willingness of both Republicans and Democrats to send an Ambassador to Ukraine to help President Volodymyr Zeleskiy face Russia’s invasion.

This week, the Senate will approve almost $40 billion of military and humanitarian support to Kyiv.

Brink is a Michigan native, who also speaks Russian. She currently serves as the U.S. ambassador in Slovakia. For 25 years, she has been a career diplomat. She worked in Uzbekistan as well in Georgia.

Brink was unanimously voted in 2019 when Donald Trump, former Republican president, nominated for her to the Bratislava position.
