(Reuters) – A Chicago officer shot an unarmed boy, aged 13, who was being suspected of taking part in a carjacking. The civil oversight agency of Chicago police is now investigating.
A local hospital has placed the boy in stable, but serious, condition.
At a Thursday press conference, Chicago Police Department Superintendent David Brown stated that the department is fully cooperating and working with the Civilian Office of Police Accountability.
Brown did not provide any details about the incident. The Wednesday night shooting incident involved all officers are currently on administrative leave.
Brown stated that officers were on the lookout for a car involved in Tuesday’s carjacking.
Police say that four men stole the car belonging to a three-year-old girl from it. As the mother of the little girl fell, she was pulled to the car and beaten. A few minutes later, the car was abandoned and the little girl was uninjured.
The carjacking took place on Wednesday night. Police tried to stop the vehicle. After they arrived, the driver and a 13-year old boy fled from the car. The officers pursued the boy on foot.
Brown stated that an officer fired at the boy as he turned towards the officers. Brown said that one bullet was fired at the boy. Brown wouldn’t say whether the boy had been shot in the back as local media reported.
COPA Investigators stated in a statement they had the footage from the officer’s bodies, as well footage taken by city security cameras. They also have footage provided by third parties. COPA stated that they are unable to release footage as it concerns an underage individual.
