DENVER (Reuters] – This weekend will see a scorching heat wave blanket a large area of the Eastern United States. New York and Boston are expected to reach record temperatures, with Denver expecting to get at least a foot of snow.

Forecasters from Washington, D.C., to Massachusetts predict temperatures in the middle-to-upper 90s. According to Marc Chenard (a meteorologist with the NWS Weather Prediction Center, College Park, Maryland), the area typically experiences cool spring weather between the 60s and 70s.

A separate weather system pushes cold air south to Colorado from the west half of the country. Chenard indicated that snowfalls of between 12 and 18 inches are possible from Friday night until Saturday. The temperatures will plummet from 88°F on Thursday, to as low as the 40s Friday.

It’s quite a big swing in Denver from winter to summer, but not unheard of,” he stated. It’s not a record. This is not normal.

The Mile High City experiences snowfalls late in the season, but they are not uncommon. One-inch of the white stuff was recorded in May 1975. Denver received a quarter inch on June 6, 1953.

There is speculation that heavy snow could cause havoc in the series between Colorado Rockies and New York Mets, which will be played at Denver’s Coors Field.

Mets fans were unhappy about May’s snowstorm.

“If the Mets Rockies game doesn’t happen tonight it’s absolutely ridiculous,” Twitter (NYSE:) user Elie Rubenstein wrote. I saw intramural softball played in snow so it’s not surprising that the Mets would use snow to excuse their vacation.

HIGH-PRESSURE DOME

New York City could see temperatures of 93 degrees F Saturday. Washington may experience temperatures up to 96 degrees, according to him. The temperature should be normal Monday.

According to forecasters, the heat wave that will hit the east coast in early summer is caused by a high pressure dome of air. This air layer creates a shield against cool air flowing from Canada and pushes it westward. He said that this allows the hot air of the central and southern states to flow into the northeast.

Also, the National Weather Service issued a Tornado Watch for Maryland, Delaware and New Jersey, as well as parts of Southern Pennsylvania, from Friday at noon to Saturday.
