What is Monkeypox and how dangerous is it? Cases are rising globally

Authorities in Australia, America, and Europe are looking into a new outbreak of monkeypox, which is a rare virus that normally affects Africa.

Germany reported Friday its first casethey were the first European countries to report an outbreak of the virus.

The U.S. AustraliaExperts are trying to find the cause for the spike in cases this week.

Although some of these cases can be attributed to Africa-related travel, others are believed to have originated from more recent infected persons. spread in the communityThe risk of spreading the disease is increased.

The number of cases has more than doubled in the United Kingdom since the first case was discovered on May 7. There have been 20 cases of monkeypox confirmed in this country. However, there are fears that many others may still be undiagnosed.

Individuals exhibiting symptoms of the virus — which include rashes and fever — are being urged to seek medical advice, contacting any clinic before visiting.

Susan Hopkins (UKHSA chief medical adviser) said that the latest cases and reports of cases from other countries in Europe “confirm our initial concerns regarding possible spreading of monkeypox among our communities.”

Monkeypox: What does it mean?

After four decades of no confirmed cases, Monkeypox returned to Nigeria in 2017. There have been 450 reported cases in Nigeria as of May 20, 2022.

Since then, there have been reports of sporadic infections in 10 African countries including Nigeria which was the site of the worst-ever outbreak. 172 suspected and 61 confirmed cases. The majority of the cases were from males aged between 21 and 40 years.

Unfortunately, cases outside Africa are less frequent and often linked to imported animals or international travel. In 2003, cases were reported in the U.K. and Singapore. 81 casesAssociated with prairie dogs infected from imported animals.

What is the best way to catch monkeypox

The virus is spread when a person comes in contact with an animal, material or other human being with monkeypox.

Viral infections can be transmitted through skin or respiratory tract injuries, as well as through eyes, nose, and mouth.

Transmission from human to human most commonly occurs through respiratory dropletsAlthough it is possible, this requires frequent face-to-face interaction. Transmission from animal to person may also occur by scratching or biting.

Although monkeypox cannot be transmitted sexually, it’s not considered to be a common condition.

How can you identify the signs?

Initial symptomsIncluded in the list of monkeypox is fever, headaches, muscle ache, swelling and backpain.

A common symptom of fever is a rash that appears one to three days later. This rash often begins on the face, and then spreads to the arms and legs.

After itching can become severe, there are several steps before the legions start to scab.

The typical duration of the infection is between two and four weeks. Usually, it resolves on its own.
