SYDNEY, (Reuters) – Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison stated that he conceded defeat at Saturday’s national election. He said that although vote counts were incomplete, the Labor opposition looked most likely to form a government.

Morrison stated that he had spoken with Anthony Albanese (the Leader of the Opposition) and congratulated him for his victory in the election.

Morrison also stated that he would resign as leader for the Liberal party.

Morrison’s Conservative coalition has been in power for eight years, nine months. Morrison, who had been through several leadership shifts, was appointed prime minister of the United Kingdom in 2018.
