REUTERS/Yves Herman/File photo(Reuters) – HSBC Holdings (NYSE:) CEO Noel Quinn says his bank will not be distracted from its ambition to lead the global economy in the transition to net zero, after a senior executive said central banks had exaggerated the financial risks of climate change.
Quinn wrote on LinkedIn that Quinn claimed the remarks made by the senior banker were not consistent with HSBC’s strategy and didn’t reflect the views or senior leadership at HSBC Asset Management.
On Thursday, Stuart Kirk from HSBC, the head of responsible investment, said that global policymakers at central banks and all other authorities overplayed the risks of climate change. This was a criticism that was echoed by climate activists.
Quinn reiterated HSBC’s commitment towards a net-zero future and his position was endorsed several times by other HSBC staff, including Nuno Mateos, CEO Wealth and Personal Banking. Matos stated that transitioning to net zero was “extremely important” for the bank.
Kirk was unable to be reached immediately for comment.
