New York City residents have tested positive late Friday for the virus that causes monkeypox. State Health officials confirmed it.

Unidentified patient being treated is being kept in isolation and treating as positive, while the Centers for Disease Control finalizes the matter.

New York City officials in public health said that they are investigating possible cases of monkeypox. This rare virus, which can mimic flu symptoms and is rarely found outside Africa, was reported to be on the scene Thursday.

According to the state Health Department, testing proved that the other case was not present.

New York is the latest victim of the apparent virus. The World Health Organization (WHO) has already identified around 80 new cases and about 50 suspected cases. Massachusetts’ first monkeypox case was confirmed by health officials on May 18.

New York city and state officials are working together to find out how this patient contracted the disease. The city epidemiologists are reaching out to people that may have come in contact with this person.

This virus is found in wild primates, as well as other animals. It causes severe symptoms such fever, body aches and chills. Severe cases may cause rash, lesions and skin rashes on the hands, face and body.
