(Reuters) – New York Judge approves a revised congressional map. It pits two veteran Democratic incumbents in direct competition. This increases Republican chances of capturing additional seats in the November midterm elections. Further, it threatens Democrats’ fragile U.S. House majority.
Justice Patrick McAllister, a judge in rural Steuben County, signed off on the map just before midnight on Friday, weeks after New York’s top court ruled that the redistricting plan passed by the Democratic-controlled legislature was unconstitutionally manipulated to benefit the party.
According to the Democratic map, the party would control 22 of 26 states’ congressional seats. It also serves as a counterbalance for similar Republican maps such as those passed in Florida, Georgia, Texas, and Texas.
For Republicans to gain a majority in Congress, they must win five more seats than Democrats in November. That would give them the ability to stop President Joe Biden from implementing many of his agendas.
Jonathan Cervas (court-appointed special master) was the one who created the map. He stated in court documents that his plan would create eight districts with 15 Democratic seats and three Republican seats.
This map combined the Manhattan districts Jerrold and Carolyn Nadler, both of whom have served the House for over 30 years. They now seem to be heading for an intense and expensive August primary battle.
The homes of Jamaal Bowman and Mondaire Jones, both Black Democratic first term congressmen in Westchester County north of New York were drawn into one district.
Sean Patrick Maloney is the Democratic Party’s chair for the national congressional campaign arm. He announced this week that Maloney would seek to run in the new district, which includes most of Jones’ current seat. Jones’ friends were furious and said they would force him into running against Maloney or Bowman.
Jones announced that he would run for the new 10th congressional district, which covers parts of Brooklyn and Manhattan. Bill de Blasio (the former New York City Mayor) has declared his intent to run in the district. It is expected that there will be a lot of candidates.
Democrats who used their legislative majority to pass an aggressive gerrymander are disappointed by the new map. However, after Republicans sued the Democrats, the courts determined that the Democratic Map was in violation of the 2014 Constitution amendment which sought to eliminate partisanship during redistricting.
Cervas claimed that he’d received thousands of feedback since Monday’s release of the draft. He made some adjustments, such as reuniting various Black communities with Asian American communities in New York City.
