(Reuters] – Sunday’s shooting of a New York City man, 48 years old, occurred while he was riding in a subway car. It appeared that this attack was the latest in a long string of attacks on New York City’s transportation system.
Kenneth Corey (NYPD chief of police) said during a briefing that the unidentified gunman fled after the train reached Manhattan Station.
“Preliminary investigations reveal that the suspect was moving back and forth in one train car, and without provocation pulled out a gun, and shot it at the victim as the train crossed the Manhattan Bridge,” Corey stated.
According to Corey, the gunman was described as a dark-skinned, heavy-set man wearing a sweatshirt and sweat pants. He fled the station when the train arrived.
Police stated that the suspect and victim didn’t appear to have interacted before the shooting. The victim was not identified but was taken to Bellvue Hospital.
New York City is witnessing an upsurge in violence. This has been coupled with a string of random attacks against subway riders.
Some of the victims of transit violence include passengers who were pushed onto trains from platforms. This included a Manhattan woman, whose death was linked to a spike in hate crimes targeting Asian Americans.
A gunman opened fire on a New York City subway vehicle, inflicting more than 20 injuries. Frank James, a 62 year-old suspect was taken into police custody.
