TORONTO (Reuters] – Authorities say that at least eight people were killed by powerful thunderstorms over Canada’s two largest provinces. On Sunday, emergency crews carried out a major clean-up in an effort to bring power back to half a million residents.

These storms left extensive destruction across parts of Ontario, Quebec, and the surrounding areas. They lasted over two hours and had the strength of a tornado. Utility companies stated that wind gusts of up to 132km (82 miles per hour) decimated trees and lifted electric poles.

The restoration of transmission lines was a major concern for electric companies, who were on hand to assist in the rush hour. Authorities stated that most deaths caused by storms were due to people being hit by fallen trees.

Justin Trudeau, the Prime Minister of Canada said that his government would help anyone in need. Trudeau posted a tweet on Sunday: “We are thinking about everyone affected and thanking those who work to restore power.”

Hydro One is Ontario’s largest electric distribution company. It tweeted on Sunday, saying that crews have been responding to severe damage. Environment Canada issued mobile warnings about the severe storms.
