REUTERS/Octavio Jones/File PhotoWASHINGTON (Reuters] – U.S. Representative Madison Cawthorn lost his re-election race last week due to scandal. He was under investigation by the Congress for insider trading allegations and a relationship that was inappropriate with a staff person.
Bipartisan House of Representatives Ethics Committee declared the investigation. It stated in a statement, that all 10 of its members had unanimously voted to create an investigative subcommittee.
Cawthorn’s spokesperson did not respond immediately to our request for comment.
A panel of ethics said that the investigation would investigate whether Cawthorn “improperly promoted cryptocurrency” and whether he had an undisclosed financial stake.
The committee cautioned, however that opening an investigation does not necessarily mean that there has been a violation.
Cawthorn was 26 years old and the youngest congressman. He lost his bid to re-elect Chuck Edwards, North Carolina state senator, in the Republican primary. This happened after major party figures turned against Edwards through a series of self-inflicted scandals.
The Washington Examiner reported April 1st that Cawthorn promoted a crypto coin mocking President Joe Biden.
Cawthorn was embarrased in his re-election campaign. He claimed he was invited by Washington leaders to attend a Cocaine-fueled Washington orgy. Two attempts were made to take a gun on an airplane. His description of Volodymyr Zelenskiy, the Ukrainian president, as a “thug.”
Cawthorn, a staunch supporter of President Donald Trump and who had supported his reelection campaign, was once seen to be a rising star in the Republican Party.
