GENEVA (Reuters), – Over 100 million people around the globe have been forced to flee violence, conflict, and other human rights violations, according the U.N. refugee organization (UNHCR).

Millions of refugees fled Ukraine because of war in Ukraine, according to UNHCR. They also claimed that long-running conflicts in Ethiopia and the Democratic Republic of Congo contributed to their high number.

Filippo Grandi, U.N. High Commission for Refugees said that “it’s an record that shouldn’t have been set.” He sent a statement to journalists. This must be a wake up call for all those who are unable to stop destructive conflict, persecution and the root causes of people fleeing their homes.

UNHCR’s data include refugees, asylum seekers, and people who have been displaced in their home countries. A humanitarian organization said last week that the number of people displaced in their countries reached an all-time high of 60 million by the end 2013

Grandi called for action on the cause of displacement and said that humanitarian aid is only treating the effects.

He said, “To reverse the trend, peace and stability is needed so innocent people don’t have to choose between precarious flight or exile and acute danger at their home.”
