ATLANTA, Reuters – Authorities in Atlanta said that they have discovered a third case in America of monkeypox. They are currently testing a South Florida patient to determine if the individual has been infected. This rare disease is not common in Africa.
Broward County in Florida is dealing with an international case, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, and the Florida Department of Health. “The person continues to be isolated,” they said.
Soon, the CDC will release results from its tests. The release stated that no other cases were reported in the state.
On Wednesday, Massachusetts reported the first case of monkeypox in America. This disease is milder than human smallpox and similar in appearance to the common cold. The victim was a Canadian national who recently visited Canada. According to health officials, the disease did not pose a risk to the general public.
Officials said Friday was the second U.S. confirmed case. It involved a New York City resident, who had tested positive on Friday for the virus.
More than 100 new cases have recently been reported in Europe of this viral infection. It spreads via close contact between people.
The virus Monkeypox is most common in central and west Africa. It was first reported in the Democratic Republic of Congo during the 1970s. The symptoms include skin rashes, fever and headaches that start on the head and spread to other parts of the body.
