(Reuters] -The World Health Organization has not provided evidence that monkeypox has mutated. A senior U.N. official stated Monday that they do not believe that there is any proof. The agency noted that this infectious disease, which has been endemic in West and Central Africa, has tended to not change.

Rosamund Lewis is the head of smallpox’s secretariat, which forms part of WHO Emergencies Programme. She explained that although mutations with this virus are more common, genome sequencing will be a key component in understanding the current outbreak.

Maria van Kerkhove from WHO, emerging diseases and zoonoses leader and technical lead for COVID-19 said the over 100 cases that were confirmed in recent European and North American outbreaks haven’t been serious.

She stated, “This situation is manageable.”

According to WHO, the outbreaks are unusual because they occur in countries that do not have the virus regularly. Scientists seek to determine the source of the outbreaks, and whether the virus has evolved.
