(Reuters] – New York’s judge has approved a congressional map which pits two former Democratic incumbents against each other. The new map increases Republican chances to win more seats in November’s midterm election, further jeopardizing the fragile U.S. House majority.
Justice Patrick McAllister, a judge in rural Steuben County, signed off on the map just before midnight on Friday, weeks after New York’s top court ruled that the redistricting plan passed by the Democratic-controlled legislature was unconstitutionally manipulated to benefit the party.
A Democratic map would have likely given party control over 22 of 26 state congressional seats in this fall’s election. This was to offset similar partisan maps that were passed in Republican-dominated States like Florida, Georgia, and Texas.
For Republicans to gain a majority in Congress, they must win five more seats than Democrats in November. That would give them the ability to stop President Joe Biden from implementing many of his agendas.
Jonathan Cervas (court-appointed special master) was the one who created the map. He stated in court documents that his plan would create eight districts with 15 Democratic seats and three Republican seats.
This map combined the Manhattan districts Jerrold and Carolyn Nadler, both of whom have served the House for over 30 years. They now seem to be heading for an intense and expensive August primary battle.
Two Black Democratic first-term Congressmen from Westchester County (northern New York), were drawn together to form the same district.
Sean Patrick Maloney is the Democratic Party’s chair for the national congressional campaign arm. He announced this week that Maloney would seek to run in the new district, which includes most of Jones’ current seat. Jones’ friends were furious and said they would force him into running against Maloney or Bowman.
Jones announced that he would run for the new 10th congressional district, which covers parts of Brooklyn and Manhattan. The former mayor of New York City, Bill de Blasio has announced that he will run for the District. This is likely to attract a large field.
Democrats were disappointed with the outcome of their aggressive gerrymander and used their legislative power to make it happen. However, after Republicans sued the Democrats, the courts determined that the Democratic Map was in violation of the 2014 Constitution amendment which sought to eliminate partisanship during redistricting.
Cervas stated that he has received thousands of comments on the Monday release of a draft and had made changes to include reuniting many Black and Asian communities in New York City.
