REUTERS/Pascal RossignolBELGRADE, (Reuters) – Stellantis offered its workers in Serbia a choice of moving to another country for two years in order to retrain in electric vehicle production or redundancy. It said this on Tuesday.
However, the company didn’t say how many Kragujevac workers were offered this opportunity.
Stellantis and Serbia signed last month a deal worth 190 million euros ($200 million) to allow the carmaker Kragujevac to make an electric vehicle. The plan is being funded by 48 million euros from Serbia.
Stellantis stated in a Serbian statement that as part of preparations to begin production in 2024 some employees will be offered employment in its European plant, which is either transferring production to electric cars or taking redundancy.
The company stated that the initial results were encouraging. During the first week, as much as 25% of employees indicated their willingness to travel abroad and over 100 coworkers accepted the offer to work at other Stellantis plant in Europe.
“Individual interviews” will take place in the next days.
Sasa Drojjevic, the head of the union in the plant, stated that it is wrong for workers to be forced to decide between leaving and working overseas.
“Serbia stated it would be participating in the investment with 48 millions euros, and it’s not fair that it uses that money for its citizens to fire them or to move them overseas,” he added.
Djordjevic stated that any relocation must be voluntary and in accordance with Serbian law.
