WASHINGTON (Reuters). – Democratic U.S. On Tuesday, Senator Chris Murphy asked his colleagues for action against gun violence. This came just hours after 14 Texas school children were killed by a shooter. Murphy dismissed the common Republican argument that he was asking them to do so.

Murphy represented Connecticut’s congressional district, where gunman shot 26 school-age children, and teachers at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Murphy called on his Senate colleagues to create legislation to limit the proliferation of firearms.

Murphy said that he didn’t get why so many people think they are powerless after his fiery speech on the floor. Murphy said that it was no coincidence that the United States is the nation with the lowest gun laws and highest death rate in the world. Guns flow like water in this country, you know. Mass shootings after mass shootings are common.

After the Sandy Hook shooting in 2017, which saw a gunman attack on Republican lawmakers who were practicing baseball and a similar attack at a Buffalo, New York grocery store, previous attempts to put new restrictions on guns fell apart.

After past attacks, many Republican legislators have opposed new gun ownership restrictions. They argue that the United States must do more to stop mental illness. This can lead to some shootings.

Murphy said “Spare Me the Bullshit About Mental Illness” in anticipation of Murphy’s response to Tuesday’s attack, which resulted in 14 deaths, including a teacher. We don’t have more mental illnesses than any country. This cannot be explained through the lens of mental illness. We are not an exception in mental illness. It’s not common for criminals or very sick individuals to have access to guns. This is what makes America unique.

In the coming weeks, the U.S. Supreme Court is likely to decide on a case which could significantly expand the right of concealed handgun carry. It will be challenging a New York state law opponents claim to violate the Second Amendment U.S. Constitution right to keep and Bear Arms.

Murphy indicated that he is open to bipartisan collaboration, saying that the bill should “show progress” rather than be an ideal legislative solution.

Thom Tillis, a Republican senator said that lawmakers should look into “reasonable steps” to curb threats to local communities.

He told reporters, “I’m willing to accept any kind of thing as long as they don’t violate the rights of law-abiding citizens.”
