MIAMI (Reuters – Most Caribbean Community members plan to attend the Summit of the Americas according to two sources. Some leaders are calling for a boycott if Washington exempts ideological enemies in the region.

Latin American leaders, including the Mexican President Andres Manuel Obrador, have threatened not to attend the summit which begins in Los Angeles on June 6, if the United States doesn’t invite Venezuela, Cuba, and Nicaragua.

According to senior Caribbean officials and Washington-based Caribbean advisors who were involved in discussions about the matter, thirteen of 14 members of Caricom plan to join the event.

Officials said that recent Biden Administration measures towards Cuba and Venezuela encouraged Caribbean countries to attend the summit, which they had previously considered.

According to the unidentified official, they believe that attending the summit is better than not going.

According to both sources, Saint Vincent and Grenadines was the sole Caricom nation that is still in existence.

Ralph Gonsalves was the country’s premier minister and he wrote to Reuters on May 11, asking Caricom leaders for a boycott of the summit in protest at the exclusions from Venezuela, Cuba, Nicaragua.

According to a State Department senior official, the invitations were not likely for these three countries in April. But Biden Administration officials suggested last week that Cuba may be invited.

Caricom currently has 15 members, including Montserrat which is an oversea territory of Great Britain.
