WASHINGTON, (Reuters) – The U.S. Senate Republican primary was deadlocked between Dr. Mehmet O, a celebrity in the field of wellness, and David McCormick, a former executive at hedging funds. (NYSE:) Acting Secretary Leigh Chapman stated Wednesday that the recount would take place in Pennsylvania. However, it will be delayed until next month.
Oz, whose candidacy had been propelled in final weeks by an endorsement by former President Donald Trump led McCormick with only 902 votes. McCormick was also reporting from all the counties within 0.5% of an automatic recount.
Chapman stated that McCormick did not give up his right to recount. She also said she would issue the official declaration Thursday afternoon. The recount must be completed by the respective counties no later than June 7, Chapman stated.
Both men will be competing for the Republican nomination in order to face off against John Fetterman (Democrat) during the Nov. 8 midterm election. This is to replace the retiring Republican Senator Pat Toomey.
Trump is currently considering a third presidential run in 2024 and this outcome will test his power over the Republican Party. He has supported over 190 candidates in his attempt to cement his role as party kingmaker. However, his choices haven’t always won.
McCormick and Oz have both promoted Trump’s populist “America First!” agenda. However, they both faced doubts about the truth of their conservative beliefs and their loyalty to a state where they were only just recently residents.
Fetterman was a tattooed liberal lieutenant- governor and a goateed. He has maintained an “everyman appeal” by wearing hoodies while on the campaign trail. Conor Lamb of the United States was Conor Fetterman’s opponent for the Democratic nomination. Conor had received a pacemaker to treat irregular heart rhythms which caused him a stroke and he won his Democratic nomination. Doctors expect him to make a complete recovery.
In the final weeks of the 2024 presidential elections, the fate of Pennsylvania’s seat will determine who controls the U.S. Senate 100-seats. Because of Kamala Harris’ tiebreaking vote, the chamber is split 50-50.
Republicans are also fighting to defend open Senate seats in Ohio, North Carolina and Wisconsin. New Hampshire, Arizona, Nevada, Georgia and Nevada are all vulnerable to Democratic incumbents.
