UVALDE (Texas) – A teenage gunman killed 19 children and 2 teachers in a South Texas schoolroom. The massacre was two days ago. Uvalde, Texas, is still reeling from one of the most horrific school shootings in almost a decade.
Chris Olivarez of the Texas Department of Public Safety spoke out on Thursday, saying that investigators are still trying to establish a timeline. This included how long Salvador Ramos (18) remained behind bars before officers entered the school and shot him.
National debate has erupted over gun laws in the United States after this shooting. The President Joe Biden, along with his Democratic colleagues, has pledged to press for more restrictions, even if Republicans resist.
Ramos was a former high school student who had never been convicted or suffered from mental illness. There were no warning signs. Governor Greg Abbott claimed that Ramos sent an anonymous message on Wednesday to say that he had been about to shoot up an elementary school.
Ramos attacked his grandmother at their home before fleeing from Robb Elementary School and colliding with his car. This happened around 11:30 GMT (1630 GMT). Ramos shot his grandmother in the face at their home before fleeing and crashing his car outside Robb Elementary School. His condition is critical but he managed to contact police.
Ramos, who was carrying an AR-15 semiautomatic gun and fled the scene, dropped a bag of ammunition while evading a school officer. Officials offer conflicting reports on whether Ramos or the officer exchanged guns before Ramos was allowed to enter the school.
Olivarez said to CNN, “We are trying to establish exactly his role and how it came about,”
Olivarez stated that Ramos injured two officers in a hallway and then barricaded himself into a fourth-grade classroom. In an attempt to save children and staff, hundreds of law enforcement officers responded with encircling the building and breaking windows.
Olivarez stated that police set up a fence around the school to stop anyone, including parents, trying to get in. Officials stated that members of an American Border Patrol tactical unit eventually broke into the school and killed Ramos. One agent was also injured in the melee.
Uvalde Police Department stated that the incident ended shortly after noon (1800 GMT).
Olivarez claimed that the attack lasted 40 to 60 minutes. He could not however say when Ramos killed his grandmother, or when Ramos brought the teenage boy to the school. FBI officials are currently trying to get surveillance video from the school’s cameras.
Ramos bought two semi-automatic rifles as well as hundreds of rounds ammunition during the days preceding the attack.
Adriana Reyes (the suspect’s mom) was interviewed by DailyMail.com and described her son’s personality as “an individual who kept to himself” without having many friends.
Additionally, at least 17 other people, including several children were injured.
Family members of victims took to social media in grief over the death of their children.
Kimberly Mata-Rubio shared the following message on Facebook (NASDAQ): “We told Alexandria Aniyah Rubio that we loved and would pick them up after school.” The post was posted by Kimberly Mata-Rubio in honor of Alexandria Aniyah Rubio. She is fourth-grade honors student. “We didn’t realize this was goodbye.”
GUN CONTROL DEBATE
It was 10 days following the shooting of 13 Black people by an openly white supremacist at a Buffalo supermarket.
Washington: The Senate was split between Republicans and Democrats.
Biden, who has called for Congress to act on his request, will pay a visit to Uvalde over the next days.
On Friday, the National Rifle Association will hold its annual meeting in Houston. Here, Republicans, including Abbott, U.S. The gun rights group was addressed by Ted Cruz, Senator from Texas, and Donald Trump.
While the NRA sympathized with the victims of the attack, they said the event will continue as planned.
According to data from the Center for Homeland Defense and Security at Naval Postgraduate School, shootings are now so regular in American schools that almost every day this school year, a gun was fired.
Texas is home to the worst school shooting in American history. 26 children were killed by a gunman at Sandy Hook Elementary in Connecticut, December 2012. Parents across the nation were left grieving and fearful after the Texas attack.
Uvalde has close to 16,000 residents. This is nearly 80% Hispanic and Latino. Because the town was small, many people knew the victims or their families. Even the official who had to identify the bodies.
On Wednesday night, crime-scene tape had been placed around the school. Passers-by came up to the police station to give flowers and toys to the officer, who then took the items to the temporary memorial.
