Ottawa (Reuters – Police in Toronto shot and killed a man who was carrying a firearm. The incident prompted the police to lock down five schools nearby.

After receiving numerous 911 calls regarding a man carrying a gun, Scarborough police responded and found him within minutes. About 20 minutes later, the man (27-year-old) was declared dead.

James Ramer of Toronto Police stated that officers responding on the call were confronted and questioned by the man. He declined further details citing the ongoing investigation. After police had stated on Twitter (NYSE 🙂 that they had shot and hurt the suspect, this was before Ramer.

This incident happened days after an attack on a Texas elementary school that resulted in the deaths of 19 students and 2 teachers. There are more worries about gun violence in Texas after the Texas shooting.

Canada is a country where mass shootings are less common than the United States. Gun control laws in Canada are more strict than those in America.

An investigation into the incident is underway and Saturday’s post-mortem exam has been scheduled, according to the SIU. This independent government agency is charged with looking into the conduct of police officers.

SIU’s goal is to finish its investigation in 120 days. This can change depending on each case.

According to an analysis of 2021 by University of Washington’s Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, Canada has a rate of firearm-related homicides of 0.5 per 100,000. This is far less than the 4.12 U.S. rates.
