REUTERS/Fabian Bimmer/File PhotographBERLIN (Reuters – Germany announced Sunday that it had agreed to amend its constitution in order to create a special credit-based defense fund for 100 billion euro ($107.35 million) following Russia’s invasion.
Germany’s centre right opposition and the ruling coalition that includes centre-left Social Democrats, Greens and probusiness Free Democrats (FDP), claimed they achieved the necessary two-thirds majority for the exclusion of the defense fund from the constitutional debt brake.
Sources familiar with the matter say that the FDP leader Christian Lindner and SPD’s Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht led the negotiations. Greens leader Annalena Bock, Mathias Middelberg, was the vice whip of the opposition.
This money will be used for several years to boost Germany’s defense budget, which is approximately 50 billion euro. It also allows Germany to reach the NATO goal of spending at least 2% of its annual economic output in defense.
