LONDON (Reuters] – Britain will celebrate Queen Elizabeth’s historic 70-year reign this week. There are four days of events, ranging in size from street parties to a performance outside Buckingham Palace and military marches.

Elizabeth (96) celebrated seven decades of her reign on the throne. In February, two public holidays were set aside in order to make a 4-day weekend dedicated to national events.

As the monarch has had to cancel a lot of her official engagements recently due to “episodic mobile issues”, it is unclear how many she will be attending. Officials at the Royal Court say that her attendance will be determined by Buckingham Palace.

Boris Johnson, the Prime Minister, paid tribute to Elizabeth the Great in Parliament last week. He said her dedication and service to duty is unmatched.

He said, “I hope we can…show with every bonfire and with every street party, aerobatic show, and concert, a love, and a dedication to reciprocate her love, devotion, and leadership shown to the entire country over seventy years.”

Four days of events will start on Thursday with the classic “Trooping the Colour,” military parade, in central London. It will then be followed by flypasts of historic and modern aircraft.

Queen Elizabeth is expected to also make an appearance at Buckingham Palace’s balcony to welcome the people, but her grandson Prince Harry and son Prince Andrew will not be there.

Andrew resolved a U.S. suit in February that he had been accused of sexually assaulting Virginia Giuffre. Due to his connections with Jeffrey Epstein (a U.S. felon in sex crimes), Andrew previously quit public office.

Harry, the younger son of Prince Charles, gave up his royal duties in order to travel with Meghan, his American wife, to Los Angeles. From there, they made barbs against and accused of racism of members of the royal family.

Both will likely attend other events over the weekend. She will not be able to attend the funeral of her husband, Prince Philip. He died last April at age 99 after spending 73 years with her.

SERVICE, HORSE RACE & PARTIES

Friday’s service of thanksgiving will take place at London’s St Paul’s Cathedral. On Saturday, the queen and her family will attend the Derby horse racing. The concert at Buckingham Palace will feature the stars of Queen and Duran Duran as well as Diana Ross from the United States.

On Sunday, celebrations end with street parties in London as well as a pageant through the capital.

Elizabeth was on an international tour to Kenya when her father, King George VI, died. She became Queen of Britain, Australia, New Zealand, and more than 12 other realms.

Josef Stalin, Mao Zedong, and Harry Truman led the Soviet Union, China, and United States at that time. Winston Churchill was British Prime Minister.

In September 2015, she overtook her great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria to become the longest-reigning monarch in nearly 1,000 years of a line that traces its origin back to Norman King William I and his 1066 conquest of England.

In her seventy-year tenure on the throne the queen has served as a symbol of stability in a country that was going through huge socio, economic and political shifts, such as the fall of the British Empire.

“Not only have your majesty always been present in the lives of most of the subjects of yours, but also you are the third longest-serving monarch in world history,” said the Speaker of the House of Commons in a statement.

According to polls, she is still very popular and respected. However, they indicate that younger generations are becoming less interested in the monarchy.

YouGov conducted a survey of the Republic campaign group on Thursday and found that nearly half of respondents weren’t interested in the jubilee.

Graham Smith of Republic stated that the jubilee “is not an occasion for national celebrations, but a minor interest.” “The monarchy’s future seems in grave doubt due to the absence of interest throughout the country, and across all age categories below 65.”
