BRUSSELS (Reuters), – EU leaders are now in principle in agreement to ban oil imports from Russia. This was Ursula von der Leyen, Chief of European Commission, said Tuesday.

After the opening day of the EU summit, she said that “I am very pleased that the leaders were in a position to agree in principle about the sixth sanction package.”

The Council should be in a position to ban almost 90% of Russian oil imports before the end of this year. This is a significant step in the right direction. “We will shortly return to the issue regarding the remaining 10%,” she said.
