REUTERS/Charles PlatiauBRUSSELS (Reuters), Despite a slight improvement in economic sentiment in Euro zone, Monday’s data shows that there was little change in Euro zone economic sentiment in May. This is despite a slightly higher level of optimism for services and consumer than the decline in industry confidence.
Monthly survey by the European Commission showed an improvement in economic sentiment among the 19 euro-member countries to 105.0, up from 104.9 in April. Reuters polled economists expecting a reading between 104.9 and 105.0 in May.
The April industry sentiment fell by 6.3 points to 7.7 from April. However, optimism for services rose to 14.0, from 13.6 in April. The confidence of consumers rose from 22.0 to 21.1.
Inflation expectations for consumers, which hit an all-time high March 1, continued to fall, falling to 45.6 from 50.0 April. They were also lower among manufacturers, at 56.1, down significantly from the record 60.0 set in April.
