SHANGHAI (Reuters). Shanghai authorities lifted the city’s lockdown for two months starting at midnight Wednesday. Private cars, including taxis, will be allowed to drive on the streets again and residents can move around low-risk housing areas.

The Shanghai government stated that bus and train transports will resume their basic operations starting June 1. This includes a ferry connecting districts divided by Huangpu River.

According to the statement, “The city’s epidemic has been successfully controlled” It stated that people will continue to be asked to use masks and discourage them from gathering. They are also encouraged to get immunized.

Shanghai placed a lockdown in the city for 25 million people on April 1, to stop COVID-19 spreading. This was due to widespread anger at issues like crowded quarantine centers, difficulty accessing food, and income loss.

There were some exceptions to the curbs that have been lifted in recent weeks. However, most public transportation networks remain closed. People can only drive with prior approval.
