(Reuters] – In its latest round sanctions, the European Union decided to block large amounts of Russian crude oil imports. This was in response to Moscow’s invasion.

Over six months, the ban on imports of seaborne crude oil will gradually be lifted and seaborne refined products suspended for eight months. This ban excludes oil deliveries through the Druzhba pipeline, which supplies eastern German and Eastern European refineries.

However, many European buyers have either suspended their purchases of Russian oil in good faith or made plans to eliminate it altogether. This means that Russian oil imports could be reduced by around 90%.

HOW MUCH RUSSIAN OLIL DOES THE EU IMPORT?

According to the International Energy Agency, (IEA), Europe was where nearly half of Russia’s petroleum products and crude oil exports were made before Russia invaded Ukraine.

According to IEA data, the EU imported 2.2 Million barrels of crude oil per day (bpd), in 2021. This includes 0.7 million bpd by pipeline and 1.2 million bpd refined oils products.

Which EU Country Imported the Most Oil From Russia?

Based on the latest IEA data, Germany is the biggest EU purchaser of Russian oil. It imported 687,000 bpd crude oil and 149,000 bpd refined product in November 2021.

Germany also imported the most Russian crude oil to EU, at 5555,000 barrels per day in 2021. Poland, however, imported 300,000.

They are both located on the Druzhba Pipeline’s northern route, which is the major transit route for Russian oil exports into Europe.

The Netherlands was Europe’s main trading center and second biggest importer for Russian crude oil. It also imported the most Russian refined products. In November 2021, the Dutch imported 335,000. bpd crude oil and 335,000. bpd refined products.

WHICH EU COUNTRIES ARE THE MOST DEPENDENT ON RUSSIAN OIL?

Russian crude oil imports depend heavily on countries located along the Druzhba pipe that runs through Ukraine. Russian oil was responsible for 92% in Slovakia’s crude exports as of November 2021.

According to IEA data, Russian oil accounted 87% and 84% respectively of the imports of Lithuanian oil by sea in November 2021. They have both stated that Russia is no longer their source of oil.
